The Greatest Teams (according to TCMA) - 1950 Phillies

Edit: This is a series of posts about TCMA's set from 1987 highlighting some of the best ever teams in MLB history.

The 1950 Phillies finished the season at 91-63-3, which is the worst record so far in this series.  However that was good enough for a 1st place finish and an appearance in the World Series where they were swept by the Yankees.  The Phillies offense was led by Del Ennis, who smacked 31 HR's with a .311 BA.  HOFer Richie Ashburn had a down year hitting only .303 with 2 HR's.

The offense only ranked #1 in two categories - AB's and caught stealing.

The pitching staff had a 3.50 team ERA but were led by Robin Roberts (20-11, 3.02) and Curt Simmons (17-8, 3.40).  Despite the higher ERA, the pitching staff ranked 1 or 2 in most pitching categories and had 57 complete games (13 of those were shutouts).

This is another team where I would question if it's one of the greatest teams ever.  Someone at TCMA made the call, but I don't get it.  TCMA also stayed with the patriotic design concept for this team set.
I don't know why, but I kind of like this better then the Red Sox design and the Richie Ashburn photo looks very familiar, as I have an 8x10 signed by him and I'm pretty sure its the same.  This is the first team set with color photos, so I guess it has that going for it.  Next up: 1955 Dodgers.

Comments

  1. - The Phillies had to start a reliever in Game 1 of the WS. Jim Konstanty.
    - The first three games were decided by one run.
    - Ashburn led MLB with 14 triples in 1950 and he led MLB in hits for the decade.

  3. No offense to Phillies fans or the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies... but adding them to the list of one of baseball's greatest teams seems like kind of a stretch. Then again... I wasn't around in the 50's. Maybe they were legendary back in the era.
