Gambling on Cards

My computer finally bit the dust.  It had been on life support for quite awhile and in its prime did a great job.  Unfortunately nothing lasts forever and its time is done.  Its replacement is about 1/10th the size of the old desktop.  Which is both a blessing and a curse.  After removing my old computer I discovered mounds of dust that should have been cleaned a long time ago - it is incredible how much dust they attract.  On the flip side, I now have a ton of open space on my desk that I'm not sure what to do with.  It probably won't be long before that space if full of stacks of cards.

Speaking of cards, just as the title indicates, I did a little gambling.  A buddy of mine first got me interested in Pristine Auctions as he seemed to land a bargain or two off that site.  The thing that interested me the most was their 10 minute auctions.

I spotted an auction with a chance to win the MJ rookie, with most of the cards being from the 90's.  All cards were graded and if I didn't land a rookie, I was hoping for anything PSA 10 just to win back some money.

Here's a look at how these are shipped.  Pretty basic with a zip pull at the top.
And the card I got was....drum roll...

A 1990 Hoops MJ All-Star PSA 9!  Ouch.  These are about as common as a blade of grass.

Next up I took a chance at getting an Earl Campbell signed rookie card (there were a few others I would have loved to get but I just remember seeing his photo).  The second auction didn't hit the bank account to hard.

Boom!  A 1997 Finest Creators Grant Hill.  I almost made my money back on this one.  At least its a PSA 10, so I might hold onto this for awhile.  Cool looking card with Pippen making a cameo.

So for nearly $100, I made back about $35 in cards.  I'm sure someone is laughing at that punchline.
If I find enough change in the couch cushions, maybe I'll take another chance someday but I've got better things to waste money on.  And if you want to watch the opening, I recorded that with my brother and posted to his YT channel.  Check it out and happy hunting!

  2. Win some, lose some. That Hill is a pretty nice card.

  3. Yeah, I'm like you. The couple of times that I've tried something like that, it was a loss. I know that some people think opening packs is the same thing, but at least I always feel as if I got something for my money. Every time I do mystery packs it always feels like a loss.

  4. You just need to find a Grant Hill supercollector who needs that gem mint 10 and who will pay up for it :-)
