Anyone who reads this blog knows that vintage cards are near and dear to my heart. I find that working on these sets is a satisfying endeavor. The appeal of collecting is part nostalgic and part thrill. Hunting down set needs, sorting through box after box and digging for those cards in a quest for set completion is a meditative ritual. It's a pursuit that taps into the excitement of discovery and the deep satisfaction of seeing a project through.
This pursuit also exercises my patience and research skills. Determining a card's condition, authenticity and determining whether to buy raw or graded add to the challenge. There's a particular satisfaction in applying a "savvy eye" to find a great deal that makes the effort feel both rewarding and strategic.
It's also a heck of a lot easier to build sets when your amazing brother calls you up from another state and says "hey I'm at a new card store and he has vintage"!
This is the kind of stuff I like getting calls on. My brother dutifully went through a pile '56 Topps and checked my set needs. Then I guided him to negotiate a price. Just like that I was 24 cards closer to completing my 1956 set.
Many of these cards are in great shape, almost too good for my set. Love the action in the background, with Willie Jones sliding into home.
The artwork of this set is fantastic.

Did I say all of these cards are in great shape? The Redlegs team card will do just fine.
Not only did my brother deliver these cards from South Dakota, but near the end of his trip here we were able to spend some time out on the back deck exploring another budding hobby - astrophotography.
This is a shot we took while viewing the Pleiades star cluster. Kind of looks like a question mark but you be the judge. If this astrophotography hobby really takes hold, I might have to start another blog.

ReplyDeleteI do see a question mark. ditto on what Mark said....cool brother story. My 1 and only brother (I literally have a half ton of sisters- 7 still with us) used to collect cards. He got rid of 99.9% of them including those I gave him. Thumbs up to your bro hooking you up by thinking of you whilst doing his thang. :)

ReplyDeleteGetting 24 off your list at once is great. My only set build has 19 to go. Nice find for you Crocodile! I'm the only one in my family into the card hobby. I guess that is why I like to follow and read some blogs. Thanks to all of you that do it. Enjoy the day all! 60 and sunny on November 5th in central Minnesota is a good thing in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, the '56 set can't be beat. ... Both of my brothers are lapsed collectors. I don't think either of them are interested enough even to look for cards for their big brother.
