1972 Set Update

My set builds are in full effect.  I've been looking every day for cards that will fit my set needs.  Fortunately there's no shortage of these cards, but as I buy each card I'm a little apprehensive that my goal won't be on budget.  Here are a few purchases.


This was a biggie.  Higher end copies are expensive and at $45.36, this wasn't exactly cheap.  I tried to find this card at recent shows with no luck so I resorted to ebay.  Taxes and delivery suck.


Cesar Gutierrez passed away in 2005.  His card may have been less than a dollar back then.  Not anymore.  Total cost: $5.80.


Phil Hennigan looks great in this photo, but he set me back $8.20.


I'm not sure if it was wise to pay $16.22 for this card, but these high numbers are tough.


What can I say about Bob Veale?  He had a decent career going 120-95 with a 3.07 ERA.  I wish his card was more decently priced but it came in just under my $10 budget ($9.92). 


I was hoping I could land Jim Hart for a better price, but it wasn't in the cards.  Total cost: $8.17.


Rookie Stars in high numbers shouldn't be allowed.  This set me back $14.


These three set me back $8.65, $7.30 and $5.95.  That just doesn't feel right.


So there's my first update.  36 cards left and a $350.27 salary cap.  This could be close.

    I always thought the big TRADED stamp across the front was awesome.

    Yep, it's a grind. My Morgan Traded might be the worst-conditioned card in my set, but it's too expensive to find an upgrade. (The Jim Stewart card I think was the first '72 HN I ever had, obtained when I was a teen).

    I remember when I finished my 72s I basically was a year late cause I was visiting a friend in Mississippi stumbling to a flea market that 1 dealer had more 72 highs then I imagined reason I said I was a year late cause I was looking for 73 then & 72s were done & the prices for the highs were within the budget you working on best of luck in completing it I know once ya finish look at them just do a little look back & see what you remember of when you started it on prices.

    You made some serious progress since your last post. Ten high #'s is pretty darn impressive. That Joe Morgan is such a cool card. I like the pose... plus it's his first time featured with the Reds. Congratulations on crossing that one off your list.

    I got lucky on my '72 high numbers ~ found a whole bunch at the National in Atlantic City for a buck a shot. Won't see that any more, I'm sure....
