1981 Coca-Cola Baseball: White Sox

My quest to track down all of these Coca-Cola team sets from the 80's continues.

Recently I dropped $150 on a box of cards that turned out to be a goldmine, loaded with a fair number of 80's update sets and a few coveted "foodie" team sets.  Over the next few posts, I plan to highlight some of the best finds from this haul.

While I've written about a few football team sets in the past, today we're diving into baseball.

Here it is in all its glory: the complete 12-card team set of the Chicago White Sox as presented by Coca-Cola (and Topps) back in 1981.  The photos are basically copies of the 1981 base set with the Coca-Cola logo placed prominently on the front and back.

The back side of the card is also very similar to the base set, however two changes are clear.  First the Topps logo and card number were replaced with the Coca-Cola logo, and second, the card number was moved to the upper right.  The cards are actually numbered 1-11, with an unnumbered offer card.

For $4 a collector could have obtained an uncut sheet with all 11 teams!  Pretty cool if you ask me.

It's really to bad these sets weren't distributed around where I live, but then again, back in 1981 I was more of a Pepsi drinker.  While I may have missed out on this particular collection back in the day, the thrill of the hunt decades later is what makes collecting so rewarding.

How about you?  Did you ever buy Coke products to get the cards?

Until next time, happy hunting!

  1. Good stuff. I especially love the header cards, I think I'm a couple teams short of having all of them.

  2. I never bought Coke products to get the cards, but I remember very well Coke cans with football players on them (maybe one for each Super Bowl) when I was little.
