The Greatest Teams (according to TCMA) - 1927 Yankees

Edit: This is a series of posts about TCMA's set from 1987 highlighting some of the best ever teams in MLB history.

With a record of 110-44-1 the 1927 Yankees are certainly worthy to be called one of baseball's greatest teams. And with a lineup that boasted of Ruth and Gehrig and Earle Combs (who hit only 6 HR's but tied Ruth with a .356 BA with 35 more plates appearances), they certainly were formidable.  This Yankee team also averaged over 1 home run per game, which would have been worth the price of admission and had 4 players with over 100 RBI's.

Ruth of course, is well known because this was the year he swatted 60 home runs.  Gehrig didn't do too bad either, hitting .373 and knocking out 47 homers.  Gehrig also bested Ruth with 173 RBI's to Ruth's 165.  Those are gaudy numbers to be sure.

The pitching staff may be lesser known to most.  Waite Hoyt anchored the staff with a 22-7 record.  Overall the staff had a pedestrian 3.20 ERA but still ranked 1st in a number of other categories such as walks, hits, run and earned runs.

TCMA sure gave this team a fancy border (which I like) as it gives these cards an 'old time' feel to them.  I'm a bit ambivalent over including the manager in this set and it's too bad they didn't include players such as Benny Bengough or Urban Shocker, but its hard to argue over the players in this set.

Next up: 1934 Cardinals.

  1. A good team, though not as good as the 1980 Phillies.

  2. When I was a kid, my dad bought a baseball game for our Apple IIe and you could match up legendary teams. This team was the team I used most, so I became very familiar with them.
