The Greatest Teams (according to TCMA) - 1960 Pirates

Edit: This is a series of posts about TCMA's set from 1987 highlighting some of the best ever teams in MLB history.

The 1960 Pirates duplicated the '57 Braves record at 95-59-1 and also defeated the Yankees in the World Series 4 games to 3.  But that's as far as the similarities go (the Pirates wouldn't win another World Series until 1971 and they weren't moving anywhere).

Overall the team had a respectable .276 BA, led in part by MVP Dick Groat who hit .325 with 2 HR's and Roberto Clemente who contributed 16 HR's while hitting .314.

The pitching staff was top 5 in every statistical category, led by Cy Young award winner Vernon Law (20-9, 3.08) and Bob Friend (18-12, 3.00).

It's too bad TCMA couldn't use color photos of Smokey Burgess and Dick Groat, otherwise this is a good looking set.  The design is similar to Topps 1961 set and for the third team in a row we get a color matching border.

The question that needs to be asked is, do you really consider this one of baseball's greatest teams?.

Next up: 1961 Yankees

  1. I guess their criteria is any team that beat the Yankees in the World Series? Maybe it's just trying to get the best fairly recent team for each club. Part of the storyline for the '60 World Series was that the Pirates were supposedly so inferior to the Yankees, and it was a big upset when they won.
