Happy Halloween

All of the above Universal movie monsters use to scare me when I was a kid.  I still enjoy watching the original B&W films.  Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi were always a treat to watch.  Nowadays, our senses are overloaded with incredible special effects and gore so much so, that most scary movies don't really scare anymore.  Which doesn't necessarily make for a bad movie, but that also doesn't get me excited to watch them.

In some odd way, there are times I feel the same way about collecting cards.  The original 'vintage' cards with their simple photos printed on cardboard are always welcomed in my collection.  While the newer, shiny stuff with its fancy graphics and infinite parallels temper my excitement to collect them.

So the heck with new stuff (for now), lets get into some more vintage!

First up is a batch of 1961 Topps.  This is another set I collect off and on.  I have no idea what I need but I continue to pick up lots when the price is right.

Here's a couple of needs for the 1970 set.  I'll probably upgrade the Stargell at some point.

More for my set build.  I already have Yaz, so that one will be trade bait or go into the 'second' set.

Here's something different.  I grabbed this random lot because I had never seen these before.  Issued by Church's cigarettes, these cards date back to 1938/39.  The first two are boxing personalities and the last 'King of Speed' is from 1939.  Back then you could buy an album to hold these cards for only 1 cent!

A couple of 71's for my set build.  I had lost out on the Lindblad in a prior auction but this one didn't get away.  Those high numbers are popular.

The Banks was a set need but the Killebrew is a huge upgrade from what I had.

Frayed corners and all, the Baker/Paciorek/Baylor rookie is finally mine!   It's hard to believe how much this card jumped in price over the past couple years so this is a big get and easily the most expensive card that remained on the want list.  My set build is 99% complete.  The end is nigh!

And with that I bid thee a Happy Halloween!

  1. I know they're super popular (at least among bloggers)... but I don't know if I have ever watched one of those Universal monster movies in its entirety. I feel like I come across them every now and then at the flea market though. Maybe one day I'll buy one and give it a shot.

  2. Voting for Banks. Some big names here.

  3. Getting a nice clean copy of that '61 Dick Bertell has been on my to do list for a long time. I used to find the 1970 Lou Brock in dime and quarter boxes fairly regularly, and since I really like the card, I always bought said cheap copies and now have at least 7-8 that I know of.
