I attended the annual spring MN Card Show a few weeks back. The autograph guests really didn't interest me, except that Bo Jackson was making an appearance on the last day, so that's the day I went. It cost $15 to get in + $15 for parking, and if I'm being honest that's quite a bit to attend a card show. This year I was a bit underwhelmed by the show. It advertises 400+ dealer tables. Apparently many dealers figure sticking around through the last day isn't worth it.
I didn't pick up many cards at this show but I did find one major card I've been looking to land for quite a while. This is a nice unmarked fourth series checklist from the Topps 1957 baseball set.
Not only was it unmarked, but it is the Bazooka version! I've tried to land one of these on ebay for some time, and to just luck out at this show is incredible. It has a crease on the left side but that doesn't carry through to the front. Now I need to hunt down the 3rd series Bazooka and the Bakep error.
I did get a chance to meet Bo Jackson. He seemed liked he was in a pretty good mood. There were an incredible number of restrictions as far as inscriptions were concerned so I opted for a mini helmet. I really would have liked to get a nice full sized college helmet for him to inscribe, but he couldn't even write 'Heisman 85', so I really didn't see any point to spending more than I had to which was disappointing. I also would have liked to get a photo of him signing, but this place had guards or sentries all around him to block your view, and those that tried to take a photo were yelled at and then over the speaker system everyone was clearly reminded that no photos were allowed (unless you paid for it).
Not long after that show, there was another show where I found a couple of goodies. I found this Shaq Beam Team loose, and submitted it for grading. Fortunately it came back as a PSA 8, which means I cleared my total investment in the card. I'll hang on to this one for awhile.
I also found this 1970 Bob Gibson for my set build. 92 more cards! It is kind of nice to be in an area with so many card shows going on each weekend. I think it speaks volumes to the health of this hobby, however it's not very healthy for my wallet.
Until next time, happy hunting!
Some quality stuff here. I think it comes down to whichever was the best value between the Bo autographed mini helmet, the 1970 Gibson, and the NBA All-Star stickers.
ReplyDeleteVery nice Bazooka checklist!
ReplyDeleteI'm probably the only collector who doesn't care about Bo Jackson, so if I saw he was coming, I'd pick another day to attend to avoid the fanfare.
ReplyDeleteNice pickups! Got a friend from MN who sets up at the Dallas Show almost every time. I bet he was there too.
ReplyDeleteA. That Bazooka back checklist is really clean. I didn't realize there were variations.
ReplyDeleteB. Love the signed helmet. Glad to hear Bo was in a good mood.
C. Nice centering on those Fleer All-Stars.
Great pickups!
