My $500 Challenge

As I eye the final 50 cards to complete my 1972 set, I’ve been scouting prices online to see the damage. Everyone—including my dog—loves to warn me that those high numbers are "tough." I used to think "tough" meant they were rare and hard to find, but I’ve quickly realized that in the collector world, "tough" is just code for "expensive."  I get it, many of these are supposed to be short prints but there’s no shortage of the cards I need; the only thing "tough" about them is the price tag.

If you eyeball the list below, you'll see what I mean.  36 of the 50 cards are high numbers!  So I'm issuing a challenge to myself to see if $500 will complete this set.

When you think a $10 avg per card should be enough, well think again.  Three of those high numbers are Frank Robinson, Joe Morgan and Bobby Bonds.  Have you seen what a decent card of Joe Morgan sells for nowadays?  Its difficult to find a decent rookie card of Tom Hutton/John Milner/Rick Miller (card 741) for under $20.  And it's a good thing that Thurman Munson isn't considered a high number.

And I'm not talking about buying graded cards.

So if 3 of those high numbers set me back $40 each, and the other 32 high numbers I somehow land for $10 apiece that leaves me $60 for the rest, which should be doable.

So will $500 be enough?  Boy this could be tough.

I will publish updates as this challenge progresses.  Let the hunt begin!

  1. Daaaaang. That goal requires a lot of cash. I hope you're able to get there though.

  2. And to think that there was a time not all that long ago when someone could buy the whole set for five hundred dollars (or less).

  3. Yep. I completed the '72 set in 2017 and I don't want to know how much the SP's are going for now. I think they were averaging around $10-12 per when I was completing it. I've often called completing this set a "slog" because it felt like I was getting boxed around by those high numbers. I see you've got the Bobby Murcers and those are a couple of the tricky ones. Good luck.

  4. I know I have some cards from that set, but not exactly sure which ones. I would have to dig them out. Have fun hunting.

  5. Holy moly. I knew the SP's were expensive... but didn't realize they've soared this high. Back in the early 2010's, I thought about building this set. Started with team sets of A's and Padres. Quickly learned how "tough" those High #'s were. Ended up giving up and saving up for a completed set on eBay. Finally added it to my collection in 2013 for slightly under $700.

  6. You can do it. I don't envy the huge amount of time that is going to go into finding sellers who don't universally see their '72 high numbers as the equivalent of 1/1 signed rookie cards.

  7. $10 a card, wow. That's a big reason why I go for beaters!
