A couple weeks back, my brother and I ventured into a local card shop. The owner recognized me as soon as I walked in. This shop usually has some vintage for me to sort through but he mentioned he hadn't taken much in since the last time I had been there (which was before the holidays). So while we were checking out cards in his display cases he mentioned he had taken in a collection that day and brought out a small Ultra-Pro deck box. Inside was a gem of a near set of 1970 Kellogg's Football cards.
I tried to hide my excitement, but this was too good. The shop owner said it wasn't a complete set, but most of it was there. Of the 60-card set, this has 46. These cards were all in really good shape. Other than Stenerud's card, there are no cracks. However, the Lily card will need an upgrade as it looks like it has some water damage. The owner almost threw it away but I saved it.
Take a look:
But wait! What's that in the lower bottom right? A 1970 Kellogg's Denny McClain was nestled inside too! That's a nice find for this set's baseball cousin.
There were 3 dupes in this set (Roy Jefferson, John Roland, and Alex Karras), which I would be willing to trade for cards I need in this set.
So for $100, I've got a near set of 1970 Kellogg's football cards. I'll need probably need another $100 for the OJ, and of course this is missing the Unitas. The only disappointing thing I noticed about this set is the lack of Vikings. I counted only 2 Vikings in this set - Bill Brown and Carl Eller.
And speaking of the brother, recently he and I have both added to his YT channel (Backseat Breaks). I won some blasters at a charity event and decided to record. Check it out!
