Saturday LCS Pickup

I'm fortunate in that there are card shows nearly every weekend around here. There's also plenty of card shops. So to satisfy that cardboard urge, my brother and I took in both in a single day. While we both picked up some wants at the show, this post will be about my brother's addiction to shiny new hockey cards. He's been working through the Upper Deck set, and now O Pee Chee Platinum. I'll allow that these new cards look sharp, and on a sunny day the reflection off the cards may blind you, but at $60 a box for 20 cards, I'll pass on these for more vintage cards.

Here's a look at a few inserts of the Platinum cards. Unfortunately I wasn't close to a scanner, but there is a rainbow effect in the photos. I kind of like Conner McDavid's Best of the World and the Roman Josi's were actually pulled back-to-back in the same pack. The others are typical fancy shiny things.

He didn't stop there. A hobby box of Metal Universe was also to be had. These are pretty darn cool looking cards. Expensive, but cool.

This set highlights one of my peeves about new cards, there's no continuity in design. The Sidney Crosby is a nice example of the base set. I'm liking the diamond plate pattern and then you get to the inserts and the design is all over the board.

While my brother was hoping to pull a Kaprizov, this Stutzle sticker auto was the highlight of the box. It's really too bad card companies rely on stickers. When it comes to autographs, on card is the way to go if you ask me. I really think the true highlight is the clear acetate ALON of Artemi Panarin. I've always been a fan of clear acetate cards. The Precious Metal Gems is also a good looking card. While these are some sharp looking cards, I don't think I'll be chasing this set in the near future.

Overall it's nice to be out and about attending cards shows and browsing shops. It's fun to do a little negotiating and diving into boxes to see what gems have been hidden away. I'll update the blog with some of the LCS pickups in the near future.

  1. Very cool that you have a brother to share the hobby with. I can relate to both of you, because I like shiny new stuff... as well as vintage. Metal looks awesome. Takes me back to the mid 90's. I thought about buying a blaster when I saw them on Walmart's website, but ended up passing.
