Ok, I know it's Monday but thought I'd follow up from yesterday's Sunday Randomness post about buying some shiny new baseball cards. I picked a couple of blasters which felt unusual to me but it was kind of fun ripping some packs. This post will cover what was pulled in the first blaster.
For starters, I wasn't even sure what to expect. Overall I kind of like the design, but after reading other blogs about this year's cards I now understand the frustration about trying to read the names. Hey Topps, not everyone has bionic eyes! Here are six cards lined up. The way the design carries through from one card to the other is nice. I also didn't know Topps tried to add some "fun" cards to the mix such as the Powerful Pair and Top Shelf cards. Also this being the update series, I noticed a dearth of Twins players. In fact only 2 Twins players were pulled from the box. Williams Astudillo or "el tortuga" was a fan favorite. Hopefully he catches on somewhere else next season. The other Twins card was the 70th patch card of Kirby Puckett (sorry no scan yet).
Below are in the inserts that were pulled. I like the Campanella, as it seems I always see a Duke Snider when it comes to retro Dodgers. Of course there are other inserts besides the 35th anniversary cards. The 1992 Redux cards are in every pack, but I don't thnk I'll chase that set. There are the cards that never were, hence the Brett insert; there are Chrome inserts; and numbered parallels. And don't forget the special 70th patch cards. I'm on insert overload!
I do try to read the fine print once in awhile and noticed this odd feature on the box. Apparently a person can submit for a drawing of one of the parallels listed on the box. For Americans just send in a 3x5 card, but those Canadians...well they're going to have to do some math first! Ha! I'm not sure if that's strictly a Canadian thing or if Topps is just messing with Canada but I thought this was funny.
Count me as one of those who can't read the tiny type. Oh, and about the Canada thing, games of pure chance are prohibited as illegal lotteries in Canada. So you will see that kind of weird "this makes this a game of skill" stuff a lot in the fine print.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I figured it must be something like that.
DeleteI pulled FIVE Twins in my 4 packs. I was so stupefied by that I forgot to write about it in my post.
ReplyDelete*2 packs. It was 2 packs, not 4. Five Twins in two packs. That's insane.
ReplyDelete5 Twins? That may have beaten my 2nd blaster too!
