While at my LCS awhile back, I was in the middle of setting aside some cards for purchase when I spotted a box of small, random sets. All of these sets were a bit dusty, as if they had been sitting in storage for a long time. I spotted something that looked familiar and was happy see a nice complete glossy set from 1985 rack packs waiting for a new home. Even better the sticker price was $1. This dealer is very reasonable and owns one of my favorite shops. So this set was a throw-in with all the other stuff I bought that day. Hard to beat that.
I'm still a bit amazed that collectors continue to ignore these glossy sets. I know as a kid I pretty much ignored them too, but I've also been fascinated with them because these glossies were the precursor to today's shiny cards. So I'll continue to work on these inserts from the 80's, especially when they can be bought for a $1 (or less).
Yep, I have those sets and now that they are done, and nearly both send-in sets (40 card and 60 card) I am slowly working on the rookie sets that came out later and appear once in a while now.
ReplyDeleteI've got a binder dedicated to these sets. I'm several sets shy of a complete run, but hopefully one day. It would be even cooler if I could complete them one set at a time for one dollar a set. Great purchase!
ReplyDeleteBy the way... it's not often you see more Padres and Expos than Dodgers in any set... even back in the 80's.
Love these All-Star Glossy sets. I really should make an effort to get all of them...
ReplyDeleteThose all-star sets are really cool. They were a steal at $1.

I think I'll add your blog to my blog list.
Thanks for reading! I'll check out your blog.
DeleteI think that there's just too many of them still floating around there in discount bins for people to care too much about them, at least en masse.
