Edit: This is a series of posts about TCMA's set from 1987 highlighting some of the best ever teams in MLB history.
The 1946 Boston Red Sox finished the season with a respectable 104-50-2 record. And despite losing the World Series to the Cardinals, they made TCMA's list of greatest teams. Of course having one of the greatest hitters of all time helps. But Williams had a little bit of help in the likes of Bobby Doer, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio, which helped the team rank 1st in hits, doubles, walks and BA.
Ted Williams hit 'only' .342, which was 2 points below his career avg.
The pitching staff was led by Boo Ferriss (25-6, 3.25 ERA) and Tex Hughson (20-11, 2.75 ERA) but otherwise was rather average with a team ERA of 3.38.
As for the design, TCMA gave this set the good old patriotic treatment. The stars and stripes are fetching if not simplistic, and kind of reminds me of the '61 Fleer set. Maybe it would have been nicer to see a red border, but nevertheless, I'll take this design over that '34 Cardinals set.
Nice enough looking set. I can always appreciate cards of Joltin' Joe's underrated little brother!
ReplyDeleteOh man... what a difference a year makes. In 1945 the Red Sox finished 12 games under .500, but didn't have Williams, Pesky, Doerr, DiMaggio, or York. The first four guys were in the military... while York played for the Tigers that season.
