It wasn't long after I got back from North Carolina that my brother asked for help moving some furniture out to South Dakota (maybe I need to get rid of my truck so people don't hit me up for moves). I'm always up for a trip out west so I loaded up the truck and off I went. Along the way we stopped in Chamberlain, SD and found an antique shop and as luck would have it, the owner is a long time collector who also sells a few cards in his shop.
After completing the iconic 86-87 set, the 87-88 set has been on my mind. So finding this 80 card lot of 1987-88 Fleer basketball was awesome and gives me a big boost toward completing the 132 card set. The cards are in great shape and I'm looking forward to knocking this set out.
Next to that was this lot of random hockey cards. It is mostly 1986 and 1975 hockey. I completed the '75 hockey set long ago (you can read about it
HERE) but needed some upgrades. The '86 set hasn't been on my radar but you never know when I'll pick it up.
Then there was this plaque with 3 Michael Jordan cards (apologies for the glare). These cards look gradable. I'll be freeing them from their prison, if anyone would like this plaque let me know, otherwise it's off to the thrift store.
And of course there were some vintage cards. Actually he had books of vintage to sort through but time was tight. I quickly looked over a binder of '56 cards and pulled these 3 needs.
Elite series cards are surprisingly hard to find in the wild so when I saw this sitting for $20 I grabbed it.
Once we made it to my brother's place and unloaded the furniture, we headed out to the small town of Belle Fourche, SD. There was a small antique show that day and an old timer there had a few cards. I picked up these 5 from the 1996 Mickey Mantle Commemorative set. I'm slowly completing both the base and Finest sets.
I also picked up this 1956 card of the Vikings first head coach, Norm Van Brocklin. I have a few cards from this set and like to add to it whenever I can.
That wraps up a couple of my road trips in the first quarter. As much as I like driving and stopping to check out random shops on the road, hopefully I won't be driving cross country anytime soon.
Until next time, happy hunting!
nice to stumble into cards on a trip.
ReplyDeleteNice trip, even though it was to SD. I was out there once when I was growing up. Got to see Mount Rushmore. It was fun. I'm still trying to figure out "where the heck is Wall Drug?"
ReplyDeleteI was in Wall Drug last fall...lol. It is such a tourist trap.
DeleteIt was in the 1970's when I was there.
DeleteThose are quality cards to find in a random antique shop. Really surprised to see that Elite card in the mix.
ReplyDeleteCrocodile if ya need some 86/87s lmk where I can find your list also there's a nice 7part video on YouTube about the history of the Vikings have ya seen it they did a nice tribute to Sgt Grant
ReplyDeleteI'll have to get a want list up soon. As far as the YT series, I've seen most of those on the Vikings but haven't had a chance to finish the series.
DeleteCongratulations on finding that Williams for $20. I would have jumped all over that too.
ReplyDeleteNice pickups!
