Opening a Repack of Hockey Cards

With the Stanley Cup finals fast approaching, my mind set has shifted to watching hockey.  As much as I love playoff hockey, it's a shame my favorite hometown team is on the sidelines (again).  But that won't stop me from sorting through a bunch of hockey cards.

Just for fun, I picked up some hockey repacks.  These repacks contain 50 cards mostly from the late 80's to early 90's - years when I wasn't particularly going out and buying hockey cards.

I've picked up these repacks in the past but have never really pulled anything other than commons.  Based on that 'hook' I can picture these hanging on pegboard in a Kmart.

I love how the back of the package states that the inaugural Topps hockey set (1954-55) would cost about $400 if in mint condition!  I'd buy that today any time!

Judging by that price, I'd say these repacks were available in the early 90's.

I was kind of surprised the glue was still holding that plastic cover on.  I kind of had to put a little effort into freeing these cards.

The last card in the pack is Gordie Howe's son, Marty.  At the twilight of Howe's career he wanted to play with his sons, so he joined the Aeros of the WHL, eventually playing with the Whalers.

The top card was this cool looking Barry Beck Super Action.  I'm not sure that this 'super action' card gives anything more then any other card, but ok.

The next 7, all from the 81-82 release.  I remember opening packs of these cards.  I used to pull the Gretzky all the time and would sell that card for enough so I could go buy two more packs.

My lone card from the Topps 1984-85 set.  I have most of this set but still cool to see this in a repack.

These 7 cards are from the 1986-87 set.  No Patrick Roy rookie here.

Five cards from the 1988-89 OPC release.  This is a set I never collected as a kid.  And seeing Bobby Smith in a Canadiens uniform still hurts.  Back then, Bobby Smith had requested a trade, probably due to a 'defensive' minded coach the North Stars hired.

Now we get into the 'good stuff' - team action cards!

And more action!  The photo for the Canadiens card looks like it could have been taken in the same game as the Boston action card.

And more 1989-90 OPC!  And I get my first (and only) North Star player in Curt Giles.  He now coaches a local high school hockey team.

The best card of that OPC lot?  Borje Salming.  He skated for 17 years (16 with Toronto) and was named to the IIHF.  And that card on the right?  Kind of looks like it could be an error card, but no, its the Sabres team card.

Finally, we get 5 1987-88 OPC minis.

Unfortunately no gems were pulled but it is a repack.  The best I've ever done with one of these was pulling a Brendan Shanahan rookie, which isn't saying much.  This is still fun to travel down memory lane and add a few cards to the hockey collection.

Until next time happy hunting!
