Recent Buys and Mailbag

For the first time ever, I feel like I'm falling behind on the blog.  I've had a recent spate of activity lately as far as cards coming in, so this is kind of a combo post.  If anyone has been reading the blog, you would have seen a recent post about nonsports cards I acquired.  Within that post were a few cards from something called Skeleton Warriors and it turns out those were inserts that glowed in the dark.  Gavin, of Baseball Card Breakdown fame loves glow in the dark cards.  So I sent a box with everything I had and received a nice stack of Puckett's in return.

I had never seen the '92 Fleer Ultra All Star before so glad to add that one, and I'm always a sucker for those Topps Glossy All-Star cards.  The Panini Donruss was new to me as well, but as usual it is always nice to add another '85 rookie to my collection.  Thanks for the trade Gavin!

Gavin also sent this gloriously off centered Frank Howard for my '73 franken build.

Part of my other acquisitions consisted of this card, which I was very happy to land despite the goofy looking logo in the top left.  I don't remember the Gopher mascot ever looking like what is shown on this card.  It kind of looks like a cross between a rabbit and a squirrel.  Which is a shame, because I really like this card from the Topps 1955 All American football set.  Former Gopher, Bruce Smith won the Heisman in 1941 and was a two time national champ.  He passed away in 1967 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame five years later.

Next up, I acquired this nice Jackie Robinson Topps Chrome Platinum Players die-cut.  Whew, that's a mouthful.  I'm slowly working toward completion of this insert set.  Only 33 more to go!

In my prior post I was showing off the base rookie card of Twins star Luis Arraez.  I found this Chrome version for under $20, and it's a 10!  Not that I'm into graded cards but I couldn't resist this find.

I'm not only getting behind on posts, but also on downsizing the collection.  Which I'm finding harder to do as there's so many great cards out there to collect.  There are a few shows coming up and hopefully I'll find a few deals (and maybe close out a set or two) but at some point I need to purge a few cards. With some luck I'll be able to accomplish both tasks and checkoff a couple items on my list of resolutions.  Until next time, happy hunting.

  1. I was just watching a YT video about the drying up of Lake Mead... and the guy was blown away by the beauty of the landscape which was once under water twenty years ago. He kept saying it's sad... but gorgeous at the same time. The same thing could be applied to that Frank Howard. I bet most kids would toss that card if they pulled it back in 1973. But these days, it's a thing of beauty.
