Lately, I've been working on refining my collection—which is really just code for selling off a bunch of cards to clear some space. The problem is that I’m still actively pursuing new cards just because I like them or find them interesting. Balancing those two habits is hard enough, but actually letting go of the cards I'm supposed to be selling is proving to be a real challenge. I always find a reason to keep them around just a little bit longer. Does anyone else suffer from this inability to trim down the collection, or do you have better willpower than me?
I've never seen this 2016 Donruss Elite Emmitt Smith before, so when I found it in a dollar box at a local store, I had to take it home.
Finding these blue checklists in the wild is tough, so even though this is marked I grabbed it when I saw it. Maybe I'll find a decent unmarked card for an upgrade, but until then this will work.
Am I the only person who gets excited when I see a hand numbered auto'd Heywood Jeffries card?
Starting Lineup got fancy with this shiny Marshal Faulk, which commemorates the Rams SB win.
I also get excited finding mass produced Jordans for a couple bucks.
A Clayton Kershaw 2021 Panini Chronicles "America's Pastime" was looking for a home. This is a red parallel version /75.
One of the more unique cards I found was this 2001 Fleer Ultra "Greatest Hits of Cal Ripken Jr" insert. I like the vinyl theme to this. It makes me want to pull out the old record player so I can hear Cal sing "Taking' Care of Business" or "Rip's Rhapsody".
This silver version of a 1993 Pacific Nolan Ryan was just too good to pass up. I've never seen this in the wild and for $3, I had to have it. Love these cards.
Did you think I could go without mentioning this guy?
Boom! I did splurge for this card, I just couldn't turn away from it.
I sure haven't lost sight of my 1972 set build. 9 more to go, with 2 cards on the way here. I can't wait to finish this off.
Whatever my issue is, collecting is still as fun as ever. Especially when I can pickup a nice lot of cards like these 1975 mini's. A dealer friend found this batch for me which puts my set build at 32%. Still a long way to go but if I can get 50+ cards in one deal I'll take it.
And I have not forgotten about my 1973 Frankenset project. These four will do until something "better" is found.
That's all I'm showing off for now. I've got to get back to "refining" my collection.

Lots of nice pickups here!

ReplyDeleteNice cards and progress on your sets! Enjoy the hobby all.
ReplyDeletecards can be hard to part with....sometimes
ReplyDeleteLove the Pacific Ryan card. They had some crazy foil designs going on in the 90's.
ReplyDeleteI've got a bunch of '75 minis available if you're not real fussy about minty fresh condition....email at QAPLAGCA at yahoo
ReplyDeleteI'll make sure to do that!
DeleteSomehow I landed all of the 1973 team checklists pretty easily maybe around 12 years ago. I didn't know they were tricky at the time, but now that's all I here, wonder if it's a recent thing.
ReplyDeletea. I'm pretty attached to my collection, so the thought of selling stuff doesn't enter my head very often. That being said... I will occasionally go on selling sprees. In the early 2000's, I sold the bulk of my collection to put a down payment on a home. And during the pandemic when cards were going for crazy money, I sold off some duplicate graded cards and the bulk of my sticker autographs (on eBay and at card shows) to help buy my dream car. I've also sold bulk lots at the flea market and on Craigslist, but that's when I was into buying card collections. These days, I usually just give the bulk cards to my students or drop them off at Goodwill.
ReplyDeleteb. That Haywood Jeffires on-card auto is sweet! He had some stellar seasons in the early 90's. There was a time when I thought he'd be a hall of famer.
c. Ohtani rookies are on fire. My buddy just sold two of those Topps flagship rookie cards at a show last weekend for $110 each. I remember when you could buy a PSA 10 copy of that card for less than that. 🤯
I paid more than $110, but I'm confident the market will catch up.
